Fred Stovall Sligh, 84, died, Aug. 7, 2017 at his home in Bentonia.
Funeral services were Thursday at Scotland Baptist Church with Rev. Glen Allen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mr. Sligh was born July 17, 1933 in Schlauter to Marvin S. and Millie Mae Meeks Sligh. The family moved to Yazoo City where Fred remained until enlisting in the Army.
He served in the Korean War where he was wounded. He returned to Yazoo in 1955, where he met and married Recil Thomas. The couple remained married for 60 years until his death. They had 3 children; Thomas “Tim” Sligh, Freddie Sligh, and Coy Sligh.
Fred and Recil started out farming until Fred accepted a position to serve as Deputy Sheriff for Terrell Stubblefield. Later he worked at The Yazoo City Compress before Accepting a position as Warehouse Supervisor for Mississippi Farmer's Co-Op, Inc. When MFC was sold, he supervised the warehouse at Madison County Co-Op in Canton, MS until he retired.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Charles Sligh and James Ray Sligh, his sister Melba Jean Wilson Coker and his son; Thomas Martin Sligh.
He is survived by his wife Recil Sligh, son; Freddie (Sandra) Sligh, daughter; Coy Sligh Burton and daughter-in law; Jennie (Tim) Sligh, two granddaughters Rebecca (Paul) McAllister and Lauren Sligh (Michael) Frazier, and a grandson Chip Sligh. There are also 4 great-granddaughters and 4 great-grandsons.
