Elizabeth Ann “Libby” Clark passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 12, in New York City surrounded by her loved ones. The daughter of Anna Katherine Quekemeyer Clark and Andrew Belton Clark, Libby was born on August 4, 1931, in Yazoo City, Mississippi. She made a profession of faith and became a communing member at First Presbyterian Church in Yazoo City when she was ten years old.
She graduated from Yazoo City High School in 1949 and Mississippi State College for Women (Mississippi University for Women). After working in Houston and Memphis, she made the bold move to New York City in 1961 where she launched her career with the National Cotton Council. In 1975 Libby served as tour manager for the Maid of Cotton, and she traveled with many Maids to strategic places around the globe promoting American grown cotton. Later, Libby moved to Cotton, Inc. where she capably served in various positions and was ultimately promoted to Senior Director of Retail Marketing. Libby was recognized as being a Benefactor of Cotton by Fiber News Magazine and received the prestigious Ceres Award in 1997.
Libby was an enthusiastic member of St. Thomas Church where she was a beloved parishioner. She had a gift of easy conversation with everyone she encountered. She possessed a fierce allegiance to family and an extensive array of loyal friends in Mississippi, New York, and around the world. She was a true New Yorker.
Libby was predeceased by her parents and four brothers: Andrew Belton “A.B.” Clark, Jr., George Elijah Clark, Charles Quekemeyer Clark, and Frederick Raymond Clark. She is survived by her sisters-in law, Dora Lee Clark and Georgie Williams Clark, and her nieces Georganna Clark Meismer of Victoria, TX; Lee Clark Malouf and Anna Katherine Scott, both of Ridgeland, MS; Nettie Clark Byrd of Yazoo City, MS; and Elizabeth Clark Thacker of Hendersonville, TN; and a host of extended family members including cousins, great nieces and nephews who all loved her dearly.
Solemn Funeral Mass was held in New York City at St. Thomas Church, Wednesday, November 15, 2017, and a graveside service will be held in Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City, Mississippi, at a later date.
