Dorothy Trainor Meeks, 84, of Yazoo City, Mississippi, passed away June 28, 2017. One of seven children, she was born October 20, 1932, in Lambert, Mississippi to Ila Mae Chrestman and Clyde Lewis Trainor.
After graduating from Jonestown High School, Dot attended Mississippi University for Women and then received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Mississippi.
She received a Master’s Degree from Memphis University and an Education Specialist Degree from Mississippi College. Dot was an elementary school teacher for 36 years and also taught Adult Education classes. She served as president of the Yazoo City and Yazoo County Teachers Associations, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Lintonia Garden Club. Dot was a member of the Mississippi Association of Educators, the National Retired Teachers Association, and the Yazoo County Retired Teachers Association. Dot was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Yazoo City for 53 years, where she taught children and adult Sunday school classes and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She was a volunteer at the Christian Service Center and Good Shepherd. Dot exemplified a life of humility, selfless love and a servant’s heart. She loved the Lord, her church, friends and family, especially her grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as “Nana.”
Mrs. Meeks is survived by her husband of 64 years, William M. Meeks of Yazoo City; her son, Dr. Mark Meeks (Molly), her daughters, Sherri Hill (Harry) and Jerri Strickland (Sammy) all of Madison; nine grandchildren: Fletcher Strickland, Will Strickland, Hallye Meeks, Lilly Meeks, Hayden Strickland, Sarah Meeks, Susanna Hill, Maggie Strickland and Nathan Hill; her sister, Gerry McGraw of Yazoo City; her brother, Jim Trainor of Cordova, Tennessee, her sister, Pauline Jester of Madison, her brother, Raymond Trainor of Nashville, Tennessee and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Maxine Sawyer and her brother, Frank Trainor.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m, on Saturday, July 1, 2017 followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., both at First Baptist Church in Yazoo City. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of the University Medical Center, Baptist Medical Center Yazoo Swing Bed and Continue Care Home Health, who cared so lovingly for Dot during her last days.
