Chester Woodford “Woody” Humphries passed away peacefully on March 20, 2017. A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 25 at St. John’s United Methodist Church following visitation at 9:30 in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be at Flower Ridge Cemetery, Louisville, MS at 3:00 p.m. The Reverends Wayne Johnson and Rusty White will officiate.
Mr. Humphries was born on July 10, 1916, to Chester C. and Edna Woodford Humphries in Avon, Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 72 years Mary Lovell Humphries, brothers, Joe Humphries, Raymond Humphries, and Harry Humphries, sisters, Nannie Maud Humphries, Norma H. Pittman, and Esne H. Butler, and his son in law, James McKay, Jr.
He is survived by his five daughters Mary Anne McKay, Madison, Edna Pearson (Roy), Nashville, TN, Norma Faye Upshaw (Ken), Madison, Becky Jordan (David), Oxford, and Cathy Cox, Oxford. He was affectionately know as Granddaddy to his grandchildren James McKay, III (Suzanne), Jennifer Nelson (Kevin), Andrew Pearson (Jennifer), Will Pearson (Sarah), Susannah Cintron (Raul), Bryce Upshaw (Donis), Ashley Rhodes (Greg), Mary Margaret Watson (G. F.), Sarah Parker Mabus (Matt), Sessions Cox, and to his 25 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother Edwin Humphries, his sisters Isabel Barnes, Ruth Johnson, Maud Whittington and numerous nieces and nephews.
Woody loved his family, his church, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a charter member of the Yazoo Sportsman Club and the Panther Creek Hunting Club. At St. John’s United Methodist he was a faithful member, trustee, and church leader for over 60 years. He retired from Southern Natural Gas Company after 32 years of service.
