It’s not a question of will Yazoo County experience flooding, but how soon and how much?
Yazoo County Emergency Management Director Jack Willingham said it’s difficult to predict how the coming flood will affect the area, but it is certain that people in the flood zone need to be taking steps to protect their property.
“People who have butane tanks need to be sure they are secured or removed,” Willingham said. “Those who have private wells need to make sure they are protected to prevent the water from being contaminated. People who are building temporary levees to protect their property need to make sure that their septic systems are protected as well.”
Wolf Lake is expected to be closed to boaters this week. Some of the areas most prone to flooding, like Boat Club Road, are already flooded.
Willingham said Lake George now has high water, and flooding is occurring in the area.
Willingham said Yazoo County and Humphreys County have an agreement to work together as needed during the flood.
“Our high water rescue team in on standby, and they’re ready to go if we need them,” he said.
Cobie Collins, president of the Board of Supervisors, said residents need to be aware that they shouldn’t eat fish that are appearing in flood waters near Clear Lake Road because they are in water that has been exposed to agriculture chemicals.
In other news during the Board of Supervisors meeting Monday:
* Willingham reported that the fire rating for Satartia has improved from a Class 9 to a Class 8. This should result in better insurance rates for homeowners in Satartia.
* Seth Swafford, manager of the Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, noted that the West Levee Road will be closed from dusk until dawn for a training exercise involving federal wildlife officers.
* The county entered an agreement with Merchants Food Service to provide a dietician for the Yazoo County Correctional Facility and the Detention Center.
* The board approved the creation of Buckeye Lane off of Vaughan Road so that the properties on the lane can have E911 addresses.
