Yazoo City is among four municipalities within the state that will receive federal funds to address properties that could pose environmental hazards.
The Environmental Protection Agency 2016 Brownfields Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund and Cleanup Grant program will distribute a total of $1.525 million in federal grants to assess and redevelop sites that have potential environmental issues.
US Rep. Bennie G. Thompson said Yazoo City, along with Greenwood, Hernando and Vicksburg, were the recipients of the Brownfield grants.
“Yazoo City was awarded $325,000 of the $400,000 that is applicable to earn in grant money,” said Mayor Diane Delaware. “This will give us the opportunity to clean up our properties.”
The grand includes $200,000 for hazardous substances and $125,000 for petroleum.
Grant funds will be used to conduct 14 Phase I and 11 Phase II environmental site assessments, and prepare nine cleanup plans. Community-wide petroleum grant funds will be used to conduct six Phase I and five Phase II environmental site assessments, and prepare four cleanup plans. Grant funds of both types also will be used to complete a brownfields inventory and support community outreach activities.
In other grant news:
• Delaware announced that the city of Yazoo City will also be receiving a Mississippi Department of Transportation matching grant that will be used to improve streets and sidewalks.
