A Yazoo County woman is charged with false pretense after soliciting donations for a fire in a home she had already moved out of.
Her husband is also charged with setting that fire.
Carla Miles was arrested Saturday after investigators determined that she had accepted funds from the American Red Cross and attempted to raise money elsewhere for items she supposedly lost in a fire.
Sheriff Jake Sheriff said Miles’ husband James Ford started a fire in a home he was renting after being evicted for not paying rent. A witness said Ford kicked in the door to the house and smoke was filling the interior as he left.
Sheriff said Ford admitted to starting the fire.
Deputies later learned that Miles was seeking charity after the fire under false pretenses.
“They had already taken their belongings from the home before the fire,” Sheriff said.

In other news A Yazoo County man is charged with felony DUI after he was involved in an accident on Miss. Highway near the Warren County Line.
Deputy Simon Stubblefield arrived to find Eddie DeFrance seeming to have difficulty walking.
DeFrance state that he was not injured, but Stubblefield noticed that he smelled strongly of alcohol, had red eyes and slurred his speech.
Sheriff said DeFrance admitted that he had been drinking. He was then taken to the Sheriff’s Department, where he refused to take the breath test.
DeFrance is charged with felony DUI because it is his third DUI arrest.
“Drunk driving seems to increase in the summer months, but we are out there patrolling,” Sheriff said. “If you’re drinking and driving, there’s a good chance you’re going to get caught.”
