If you're like many people who drive past the Willie Morris Parkway on Grand Avenue Extension, you're wondering what's going on with all that heavy equipment work being done just south of the Hampton Inn. Chief among the mysteries is the big hole that's been dug.
Well, rest your curious minds because Yazoo City engineer Wayne Morrison has provided the answer.
Noting that the Walmart construction has begun, Morrison explained that they started Monday cutting a ditch that will be perpendicular to Grand Avenue.
“They've built a construction road,” he said. “They've built a tire wash pit where the trucks that are hauling dirt run through and wash the tires off so they don't track dirt into the road. They've also moved some construction trailers in.”
Morrison said continued construction work on the parkway will resume on March 16, depending upon the weather.
Speaking to the commissioners during the Public Service Commission meeting Tuesday, he explained that the parkway is paved 1800 feet from the barriers on Grand Avenue Extension.
“(The 1800 feet) is complete actually except for the final layer of asphalt, which is past the last access into Walmart,” Morrison said. “The reason we barricaded that off is because we don't want Walmart construction trucks using the brand new parkway to haul dirt and concrete.... We just don't want them to fool with the parkway until we're through (constructing) it.”
Another curiosity draw in the city is the construction going on at 49 Junction, located at the intersection of U.S. 49 and U.S. 149. The building currently under construction will house Little Caesars Pizza and another unknown occupant, according to Morrison. He said Little Caesars Pizza likely will be open in one month or less.
During Tuesday's meeting, PSC's commissioners:
• Heard Yazoo City CPA Ardis Russell present the finalized FY2015 audit.
• Approved a $10,994.01 bad debt write-off on November disconnects.
• Authorized the execution of a non-disclosure agreement by the Mississippi Delta Energy Agency (MDEA).
