The identity of the man killed in a train collision earlier this month has been confirmed.
Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers said Johnathon J. Henderson, 53, of Jackson, died on June 5 at 10:24 p.m., the night of the accident.
“He died at the University of Mississippi Medical Center during surgery,” Shivers said. “He was later identified by fingerprints.”
Henderson and Gary Welch were inside a vehicle and attempted to beat an AmTrak train at the railroad crossing at the Willie Morris Parkway. After colliding with a train, both men were ejected from the vehicle.
When officers arrived at the scene, both men were found outside on the ground near the vehicle.
While the unresponsive Welch recovered from his injuries at a Jackson hospital, Henderson’s identity remained unknown.
Using his fingerprints, investigators were able to confirm Henderson’s identity.
Police Chief Andre Lloyd said the tragic accident should serve as a reminder to drivers to not attempt to beat trains at railroad crossings.
“When those crossings are down, stop and wait,” he said
