Even though it is only the first quarter of the fiscal year, there are a few Yazoo County departments already over budget.
However, considering many heavy payments come during the first quarter, some of the departments will balance out in the remainder of the fiscal year.
The county’s fiscal year began last October and ends on Sept. 30. During the Yazoo County Board of Supervisors meeting last week, County Administrator Donna Kraft said there were three departments over budget. Those departments include the tax collector’s office, the sheriff’s department and the local jail facility.
Kraft said the tax collector’s office is $32,788 over its budget. The office has about $208,000 remaining for the fiscal year.
“However, there are so much more expenses in that office during the first three months than the rest of the year,” Kraft said. “There is insurance and tax sales. That budget will balance out.”
The Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department is $8,843 over its budget. The department has about $725,000 remaining for the fiscal year. However, Kraft said the department is similar to the tax collector’s office with many payments hitting during the first quarter.
However, the Yazoo County Regional Correctional Facility is a reoccurring concern. Over the past few years, the jail’s budget has come before the county board on several occasions. The jail is about $45,000 over its budget with about $2.1 million left for the fiscal year. The jail spent $775,000 during the first quarter. Its original first quarter budget was set at $732,000.
