State levee and local officials remind the public to be aware of the predicted heavy rainfall approaching the area in relation to the Mississippi River and Yazoo Backwater.
“Be aware and remain alert,” said Jack Willingham, county emergency management director. “With the amount of rainfall predicted, it could be a problem. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep the public informed.”
According to the Mississippi Levee Board, with the recent heavy rainfall in the Mississippi River Valley over the next 16 days, the river could reach flood stage in early February.
The Steele Bayou gates were open as of press time, but those are predicted to close by the end the week.
State levee officials also said the Yazoo Backwater is predicted to reach between 88’ and 89’.
