Brick mailboxes can be very attractive, but they can also be illegal if they are in the right-of-way of a road.
Brick mailboxes constructed in rights-of-way in Yazoo County may soon be coming down, especially those that are on roads that received state aid money.
Yazoo County Road Manager Kenny Hughes said he has received notice from the state that the county’s state-aid road funds will be withheld in the future if brick mailboxes remain in the rights-of-way of roads that receive those funds. Yazoo County receives about $3 million in state aid funds each year.
Hughes said that everything that is in the right-of-way zone (within 10 feet of the driving lane) must be designed to break away when hit by a vehicle. He said that even road signs are designed to break at the bottom if struck by a vehicle.
“The brick mailboxes have got to go,” Hughes said. “I don’t know how to tell them. It’s going to be hard to tell this to someone who has spent six or seven hundred dollars on a mailbox.”
