A local school resource officer and former police officer has been charged with allegedly choking a high school student.
Samuel Carter Jr., 49, was charged with aggravated assault last Thursday stemming from an incident on Aug. 30 at Yazoo County High School.
The 17-year-old student is accusing Carter of pushing him inside the school’s female restrooms and choking him. Carter has been placed on administrative leave within the county school district.
A probable cause hearing was held on Sept. 19 in Yazoo County Circuit Court where evidence was heard to determine whether there was probable cause to charge Carter with aggravated assault. Judge L. Joseph Lee said there was enough evidence to pursue the assault charge.
“The Court finds that after hearing the testimony of at least five witnesses, all of which are creditable…probable cause exists to support an aggravated assault charge,” the court order states. “An arrest warrant shall be issued with no bond to be set and (Carter) is to be released on his own recognizance. Further, (Carter) should be bound over to the Grand Jury.”
Carter was then charged with aggravated assault last Thursday.
Carter was a former police officer at the Yazoo City Police Department. He currently serves as police chief for the city of Tchula.
