Satartia First is planning something big for Easter this year, but they need a little help from the community to make sure the event is a success.
Rev. Royce Lott Jr., pastor of Satartia First, said the event is not only to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ but to also come together as a community to help support Bentonia-Gibbs Elementary School.
"One of the big areas of service for me is helping our educators wherever possible," Lott said.
Lott said Satartia First has created an adopt-a-school program, and they chose Bentonia-Gibbs Elementary based on the fact that it is the largest elementary school in the county.
"From seeing that students in need have food on the weekends when they otherwise might go hungry, to providing uniforms, school supplies, jackets and shoes, we try to help the school by meeting the needs of its students," said Lott.
While the event is expected to draw hundreds of people to the gathering place at the old gin in of Satartia, Lott said the challenge lies in the details. In order for the event to be a huge success, they will need donations in the form of food and other necessities to sustain the crowd for the all-day celebration.
"We need silent auction supplies - from outdoor gear to gift cards and decorative home items, we need nice items donated for our silent auction," said Lott. "One individual has offered to host the event at no cost at the gin, but because it benefits the entire community when we support our schools, I am asking that you look at the list of much needed food, drinks, and supplies and let me know how you can help."
Lott also mentioned that the event will also host a large-scale Easter Egg Hunt, among other events, and they will desperately need volunteers to help with hiding eggs, and manning games and rides for the children.
Lott said that although there will not be any cost for the activities or food at the event, there will be many opportunities for people to make donations in the form of a love offering, silent auction items, and multiple booths selling a variety of goods.
"All donations collected and proceeds gathered from the auctions and booths will go to help strengthen our adopt-a-school fund for Bentonia-Gibbs Elementary," said Lott.
Entertainment for the all-day affair features a concert from the Yazoo County Junior High and High School Band; local contemporary Christian Music Band "Laced by Grace" playing songs often heard on KLOVE Radio; guest speaker Rev. Eddie Charles Spencer, a Delta raised author, chef and pastor; selections from the Satartia Men's Choir; and finally an inspirational Easter Message given by Lott.
The Satartia Family Day and Easter Celebration will take place at The Old Gin in Satartia on Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 11a.m. until 3 p.m.
"Hopefully, this will be the beginning of more days like this to come," Lott said, "Where we, the Body of Christ, can come together to forget about our differences, joined together out of love for Him and love for our neighbors, for the benefit of others."
