Ward 3 Alderman Sir Johnathan Rucker asked his fellow board members to consider reviewing the city’s pay scale to ensure all employees are paid and treated fairly.
During Monday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, Rucker said many city employees go beyond their own jobs and should be compensated for it. He also said many employees have been on the city payroll for a number of years but still hold the same salary.
“This is not about me and personal agendas,” Rucker said. “But one of the things I ran on was the fair treatment of all. One of the things I see sometimes, that I don’t like, is sometimes we hire different people. People have different job descriptions. They might have one job description but they are doing five or six other things. They are not getting paid the right amount of money for it.”
Rucker would like to review payroll to see if all employees are earning an adequate salary.
“If it’s not broke, then we don’t need to fix it,” Rucker said. “But we do need to look and make sure everybody is being paid and treated fairly.”
Mayor Diane Delaware said the city does have a pay scale in place.
“And you are correct that we need to reconsider the pay scales we have,” she said.
In other employee news, Rucker commended Assistant Street Director Prentiss Young for his commitment to the city. Rucker noticed Young working alongside his crew in filling potholes.
“Even though he is in a supervisor capacity, he was out there himself sweating and filling potholes,” Rucker said. “That’s good to see. I am not trying to toot my own horn, even as an alderman, but three times within last week I went out and picked up trash myself. I am not above picking up trash. It’s a commendable thing when you see people in leadership out there working as well.”
