The answer was no, but we’ll be happy to come pick you up.
A poorly timed text message led to a felony drug arrest Tuesday.
A deputy stopped Spencer Murray, 19, of 9265 Anding Oil City Road, early Tuesday morning for routine improper equipment violation.
Sheriff Jake Sheriff said the officer suspected that Murray might be under the influence of drugs and asked to search the vehicle.
Murray gave consent, and there was nothing illegal in the car.
But as the deputy was looking around, a text message appeared on the screen of Murray’s phone which was on the console.
“It was a text from someone wanting to meet him at his home to purchase methamphetamine,” Sheriff said.
“The deputy took a photo of the text message with his phone, and we used that information to begin the process of obtaining a search warrant.”
Sheriff said that Murray then confirmed that he had drugs in his home.
“We went ahead and got the search warrant anyway to make sure we had our bases covered,” Sheriff said.
Murray failed a drug test and was charged with second offense DUI for being under the influence of drugs while driving.
When they searched the home deputies found a 17-year-old female who was also under the influence of methamphetamine. She was released to the custody of her family.
Deputies also arrested Randy Luke, 23, who was wanted for skipping bond.
Inside the home deputies found 1.6 grams of methamphetamine along with scales and supplies to package it for sale and four meth pipes. They also found 10 Dextroamphetamine-Amphetamine pills, which are considered a Schedule II narcotic.
Sheriff said Murray led investigators to the drugs inside the home.
“He was very forthcoming about the fact that he had been selling drugs,” Sheriff said.
Justice Court Judge Bennie K. Warrington set bond at $70,000 Thursday. Murray remained in the Yazoo County Correctional Facility at press time.
