A K9 police dog led authorities straight to a suspect who crashed his vehicle and fled the scene on foot following a high-speed chase.
Marquan Washington, 26, was charged with evading on foot and felony fleeing.
Terry Gann, chief investigator with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, said the incident began with local authorities being alerted that the Yazoo City Police Department was on the lookout for Washington. He said they received a tip that Washington was returning from Jackson, heading into Bentonia.
The Bentonia Police Department pulled Washington over to speak with him when he allegedly fled from officers in his vehicle.
“He wrecked his car at Wilson and West Railroad Avenue in Bentonia,” Gann said. “Fortunately, there were no injuries as a result of the crash. Washington then jumped out of the car and fled on foot from officers.”
Gann added that Washington was the only passenger in the vehicle.
The Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department soon arrived on the scene and established a perimeter and contacted the Madison County Sheriff’s Department to use their K9 police dog.
“The K9 found the suspect under a shed on Cox Street,” Gann said.
As of press time, Washington remained in jail.
