The north end of Grand Avenue beyond Twentieth Street will be closed to through traffic for about two weeks due to construction.
Russ Carter, Yazoo City’s building inspector, said the construction involves widening Grand Avenue and adding a turn lane for the main entrance to Walmart near the Hampton Inn.
Traffic will be detoured at Twentieth Street to Jerry Clower Boulevard.
“It will only impact through traffic,” Carter said. “Local traffic, including traffic going to and from the Martha Coker Green Houses will still be able to use the road.”
Construction is set to begin today, and is expected to last around 14 days unless there are weather delays.
Carter said the road project is the latest what he considers a very successful operation on the Walmart property.
“They are getting close to completion,” Carter said. “It has been impressive to see how quickly they have come along.”
Carter said the interior walls of the new store are over 75 percent complete. The plumbing is over 75 percent complete, and the electrical work is over 85 percent complete.
The Yazoo City Walmart store is expected to open in early 2017.
