Efforts to eradicate methamphetamine off the streets of Yazoo City continues as officers arrested two men this week in possession of the drug.
In two separate arrests, both Paul Thornton and Stephen Hasty were charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Police Chief Andre Lloyd said Thornton was pulled over by officers on the Willie Morris Parkway for a traffic violation.
“During the search of his vehicle, officers found meth inside,” Lloyd said.
In another incident, an anonymous tip led officers to Fifteenth Street in search of Hasty, who was believed to have meth in his possession.
“Officers found him at an abandoned building, where they quickly discovered he also had meth on him,” Lloyd said.
Lloyd said his department has seen an increase in meth-related arrests from actual possession to paraphernalia.
“It appears that the meth is being made in the county and brought into the city,” Lloyd said. “We are slowly walking it down and making these arrests.”
Lloyd said his investigators have not uncovered an actual meth lab within the city limits, but they are staying on top of tips and other leads.
“We are not seeing a lot of actual labs but rather people in possession of it,” he said. “We use to have a problem with rolling labs, people making it in their vehicles. But that has decreased. We haven’t run across those in a while, which is a good thing.”
