Mayor Diane Delaware urged the city aldermen to not interfere with police investigations within the community.
Although she did not name anyone specifically, Delaware said there are some aldermen who are conducting their own investigations in the city of Yazoo City. She urged fellow city leaders to not engage in such activities during the recent Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting.
“We don’t do investigations of people in Yazoo City,” she said. “When people come and tell us something, we don’t go out and launch investigations. We are not the police. We are not law enforcement.”
Delaware said most city board members know it is not a good idea to interfere with investigations. But she added that “it comes with learning,” and interfering could result in a variety of liability issues.
“To the degree that you would launch an investigation, you are probably going to get us in trouble,” Delaware said. “We don’t do law enforcement investigations. That is why we have the police. If you believe the police are doing something improperly, bring it to this board. We can talk about it in executive session.”
