Another shooting has occurred at The Teflon Event Center.
Chief Jeff Curtis said no arrests have been made in the shooting, which occurred after 3 a.m. Saturday.
“Our preliminary investigation leads us to believe the confrontation began inside,” Curtis said. “We have no evidence that shows the actual shooting happened inside. We believe it happened outside in the parking lot in front of the building.”
Curtis said a victim was shot in the leg during the altercation. The victim is expected to recover.
The Teflon Event Center has made headlines before for late-night altercations and even a murder a few months ago.
Briddell Barber was charged with murder after an altercation inside the event center tumbled outside with gunfire.
When police and first responders arrived on the scene, the body of Justin Porter, 25, was found behind the event center.
With this week’s shooting, Curtis said no arrests have been made as of press time.
“Everybody left the scene when we got there,” Curtis added.
Curtis said his department is ready to enforce the new midnight closure ordinance that was passed by the city council last month. The new law will go into effect early June.
“We are ready to enforce it, and we are waiting patiently to do so,” Curtis said. “Yazoo City has always had crime, but we have not had these kind of crimes until these establishments started staying open until the wee hours of the morning.”
Curtis said it is a recipe for disaster.
“You have the combination of late hours, drinking and other illegal activities in many cases,” Curtis said. “It can lead to unfortunate situations.”
The new ordinance can be enforced 30 days after it is legally advertised.
“As soon as that 30-day period is up, we will start enforcing shutting these places down at midnight,” Curtis said. “I think then the citizens will see a tremendous decrease in these situations.”
