A drunken altercation at a Yazoo City apartment complex Wednesday night left one man dead after being stabbed in the chest.
Joe Brown Jr., of Yazoo City, was charged with murder after police say he stabbed Scotty Adams, 24, in the chest.
“The two men were hanging out together, drinking,” said Police Chief Andre Lloyd. “They soon got into an altercation, which led to Brown stabbing Adams in his chest area.”
The stabbing occurred some time after 10 p.m. Wednesday in front of apartment 481 on Westview Drive in the Clubview Apartment Complex.
“The victim walked into his cousin’s house and told them he had been hit,” said Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers. “He then left, getting into his car and appears to have been driving himself to the hospital.”
Lloyd said Adams struck a light pole at Fifteenth Street and Grand Avenue, taking out the red light. The crash caused power outages in some areas of the city.
“On the arrival of MedStat, the victim was treated and while being transported to a helicopter landing zone on the edge of town, he succumbed to his injury,” Shivers said.
Shivers said Adams was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m. as a result of a stab wound to the chest.
“Shortly after, Brown’s mother brought him into the police station, where he was taken into custody,” Lloyd said.
Adams’ murder marks the fifth of the year for Yazoo City.
“Both of the suspects in those murder cases were apprehended,” Lloyd said. “As investigators, it’s better if you know people in town. You will have witnesses who will talk to you. If you don’t know people, they let you figure it out for yourself.”
Brown remained in jail at press time.
