A Yazoo County man was charged with molesting a child this week, and investigators said the abuse could have been occurring for at least a year.
Robert Deering, 32, was charged with sexual battery and gratification of lust last Thursday.
Terry Gann, chief investigator with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, said the victim was a 9-year-old female.
“During an interview, the victim gave very vivid statements that implicated Deering in this case,” Gann said. “Charges were then filed, and a warrant for his arrest was issued.”
Gann said Deering was arrested at a Double Quick gas station with no incident.
“We suspect that this abuse had been going on for at least a year,” he said.
Deering has a lengthy criminal history with burglary charges but no sexual crimes.
“He is well-known with law enforcement,” Gann said. “But he is not a registered sex offender.”
