A man was arrested last week after he allegedly attempted to stage an armed carjacking to cover up stealing from his boss.
Paul White Jr. was charged with attempted grand larceny and false reporting of a crime.
Terry Gann, chief investigator with the Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, said White called 911 last Thursday, claiming he had just been carjacked at gunpoint on Cox Ferry Road.
“He said he had stopped on Cox Ferry Road to help a girl who was broke down with the hood up on her car,” Gann said. “He said a white male than walked up, stuck a gun to his head and told him to slide over inside his truck.”
White told deputies the couple then took him to the end of Cox Ferry Road and dropped him off. But when Gann arrived at the alleged drop-off scene, he said he saw vehicle tracks coming in but none going out.
“I then had White take me to the scene where it all started,” Gann said. “I couldn’t find any car tracks there. But when I returned to where he said he was dropped off, I noticed a trail heading way back into the woods. I drove back about a mile and found a truck hidden in the woods.”
At that point, White was no longer a victim but rather a suspect.
“White’s boss had given him some money to buy an engine,” Gann said. “We believe he spent the money and never bought the engine. The whole thing was staged to cover that up, as well as the theft of his boss’ truck which he would probably have tried to sell later.”
