An arrest has been made in connection with the shooting death of a man outside a Main Street nightclub last October.
Malik Sneed has been charged in connection with the death of Westavius Harris, 25, who died from a single gunshot wound following a chaotic shooting outside the Red Bottom Club on Oct. 19.
Cpt. William Nevels, with the Yazoo City Police Department, said Sneed was apprehended in Texas by the U.S. Marshals Service and brought back to Yazoo City this week.
“This arrest comes from a lengthy investigation and witness collaboration,” Nevels said. “We are still very knee-deep in this investigation, and we anticipate far more arrests and more charges in the future.”
The shooting occurred outside the Red Bottom Club in the final block of Main Street around 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 19 in what investigators are referring to as a scene from the “O.K. Corral.”
Three police officers were on the scene to close the club operation down for the night when a physical altercation began among its patrons. The fight led across the street into an alley, where two males began firing shots.
According to the city ordinance, nightclubs are to close at 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. That ordinance states that “no business shall be conducted and no patrons or anyone shall remain on the premises immediately thereafter.”
The city ordinance also requires that security officers be on scene at local nightclubs. Investigators said Red Bottom did have security in place. However, the occupancy was more than double what was allowed.
Harris was shot and later died at a local hospital. A second victim was also shot and received medical treatment. A female was also injured after being struck by a vehicle.
Investigators recovered multiple bullet casings at the scene.
