A domestic disturbance in Yazoo City escalated into a high-speed chase for over 70 miles with the suspect landing in handcuffs in Leflore County.
Ariel Johnson was charged with felony fleeing and domestic violence after she led multiple law enforcement agencies in a hot pursuit last Tuesday night.
Capt. William Nevels, with the Yazoo City Police Department, said officers were first dispatched to 853 Nelson Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. It was also alleged that shots were fired into a vehicle, which was unoccupied, outside the home.
“While on route to the location, officers were advised by dispatch that the suspect from the disturbance was driving a black Kia with a Humphreys County tag,” Nevels said. “The officers then saw the vehicle on Streamline Drive.”
The driver and suspect was identified as Johnson, who refused to pull over for officers.
“This pursuit led from our city limits to Itta Bena,” Nevels said.
Interim Police Chief Jay Winstead said multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Yazoo, Humphreys and Leflore County Sheriff’s Departments, assisted with the high-speed chase.
“She drove into an apartment complex that ended in a cul-de-sac,” Winstead said. “She tried to exit the scene by driving into ditch, stopping her vehicle.”
More charges could be coming for Johnson, who also struck a law enforcement vehicle during the chase. Those charges could arrive from another agency, Winstead said.
