A former Yazoo City police officer will serve five years in prison for shooting a man outside a nightclub.
Michael Jones, 30, was sentenced to 10 years with five suspended and five years post release supervision after being convicted of aggravated assault. The shooting occurred in April of 2016.
Jones was involved in an altercation outside of a club on Broadway when he shot the victim in the stomach. The victim was taken by helicopter to a Jackson hospital.
The victim survived, but suffered serious injuries. Jones was also ordered to pay the victim $20,000 in restitution.
The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office took the lead on the investigation of the case and the prosecution by request of the Yazoo District Attorney’s office and Yazoo City police investigators.
