A former Yazoo City police officer is now the suspect in a shooting.
Yazoo City police officers responded to Jay’s Pool Hall on Broadway shortly after midnight Saturday.
They found a 24-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso. He was airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson where he is listed in critical condition.
On Sunday afternoon detectives with the Yazoo City Police Department arrested Michael R. Jones, 27, of 616 East Tenth Street. Jones is charged with aggravated assault.
Jones was fired from the Yazoo City Police Department in 2015 after being arrested following an altercation with his brother. Investigators said Jones struck his brother Brandon Jones in the head with a bottle. Brandon Jones was believed to have fired a weapon during the dispute.
Those charges were later dismissed.
Michael Jones’ attorney, John Donaldson, said after the case was dismissed that there were no eyewitnesses to the incident and insufficient evidence. Officers scheduled to testify in the case failed to appear.
Police Chief Jeff Curtis said more charges could be added. At press time the victim remained hospitalized at UMMC.
