Yazoo County continues to battle the rainfall as the community recovers from the recent downpours that caused heavy road and residential damage.
As of press time, showers still saturated the area while work crews continue to repair damaged roads from the heavy rainfall and severe flash flooding that occurred several days ago.
Jack Willingham, county emergency management director, said he had received reports of damage to 20 homes as of Wednesday afternoon.
“Another thing we are dealing with is our roads,” he said. “We are especially mindful of portions of the road along Highway 49 and Highway 16. Drivers should remain very cautious in those areas as repair work continues.”
The Mississippi Department of Transportation continues to make repairs to portions of Highway 49 near the Yazoo County High School and Highway 16, near Parkview Church of God.
After a slide developed on Highway 49, the soil began pulling away from the road causing part of the outside, southbound lane of Highway 49 to slide out, forcing the closure of the outside lane.
“That section of Highway 49 is still down to one lane,” Willingham said. “That repair work is going to take a significant amount of time to address. Also, on Highway 16 in between Parkview and Yazoo City, roads crews are doing everything they can to save that road without having to rebuild it.”
During press time, MDOT closed the section of Highway 16 for an undetermined amount of time for repairs due to damage caused by recent heavy rains.
Willingham reminds drivers to slow down and proceed with caution in those areas. He added that some rural roads, such as Christmas Road and Carroll Road, are closed due to damage.
