Local law enforcement and first responders stayed busy last weekend with an explosive accident and a rural house fire.
No one was injured last Friday night when an 18-wheeler crashed into railroad tracks along Highway 49, in between Yazoo City and Eden.
“The front tire of the truck blew out, causing the driver to lose control,” said Sheriff Jacob Sheriff. “He began to drift towards the west side of the highway, landing on the train tracks.”
Sheriff said no other vehicles were involved in the crash, nor were there any injuries.
“The truck then caught fire while it was stuck on the tracks,” Sheriff said. “It was a total loss of the truck and all the contents inside.”
Sheriff said it took about six hours to clean up from the accident and repair the railroad.
The next evening, a fire erupted in a home located in rural Yazoo County.
Sheriff said neighbors reported a fire at the home of Willie Taylor, at 5905 Phoenix Rd. Taylor was not at home during the time of the fire.
“When the Tri-Community and Bentonia Volunteer Fire Departments arrived, the house was a total loss,” Sheriff said. “The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but we are not considering it an arson. It will probably be electrical.”
Sheriff wants to thank the volunteer fire departments and the MedStat staff who quickly responded to the fire.
