Four members from each ward were selected this week to serve on the city’s election commission.
Nominations were closed Monday during the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting with a total of six names brought before the city council.
Two nominations were accepted within Alderman Ron Johnson’s Ward 1 district. Barbara Haymer, an existing election commissioner, and Cassandra Leach were voted upon during the meeting.
With the majority vote, Leach will join the commission. Aldermen Gregory Robertson, Aubry Brent Jr. and Dr. Jack Varner were support of her nomination with Mayor Diane Delaware abstaining and Johnson recusing himself.
Within Ward 2, Alderman Dr. Jack Varner nominated Lynn McCallister and Gary Haymer to represent his district. With supporting votes from all five board members, McCallister was given the post.
Sir Johnathan Rucker was the only nomination within Robertson’s Ward 3 district. And Glenda Shelby was the also the sole nomination for Brent’s Ward 4 post.
With no other nominations, both Rucker and Shelby will serve on the election commission.
