Nominations have been made to the city’s Election Commission as the city council would like to include representation from all wards.
During the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting Monday, four residents were nominated to the Election Commission. The nomination process remains open until the next board meeting in the hopes of selecting residents from all four city wards.
Recent nominations include Barbara Haymer, Cassandra Leach, Mary Houston and Sir Johnathon Rucker.
There were three members on the commission board, which were to be replaced annually.
“Whoever this person is cannot run for office though,” said Mayor Diane Delaware. “Just so you know. Even if we nominate them now, one of them may come off.”
Lilli Evans-Bass, board attorney, said the city council could have four members on the election commission. Traditionally, the city council has only had three members.
“If you would like it to be four, that is not a problem,” Delaware said.
“The way your ordinance is that it was to be four, one from each ward,” Bass-Evans added. “But then you went to three at-large, compliant with state law.”
Delaware said the board should follow its ordinance, leaving the nominations open with a commissioner from each ward.
