After several complaints from neighbors, the city of Yazoo City begins the process of cleaning up what has been described as a “snake pit” within the community.
Russ Carter, city building inspector, said the legal process has started to address the vacant lot at 427 Lamar Ave. in Yazoo City.
Carter said the lot has been in its current state for years, and recent complaints have sparked action from his office.
“We are in the process of working on what we need to do to address this,” Carter said, Monday afternoon. “We are trying to take legal yet immediate action.”
The Lamar Avenue lot has a pile of debris over what use to be a house. Snakes have since made it a home of their own, underneath the rubble.
“It’s a snake pit,” Carter said. “I would also like to urge the public, especially children, to stay away from this property until we address it. It is a danger to the community.”
Carter said that the owner of the property is Coretta Strong, who lives nearby at 327 Lamar Ave. However, Easthaven Investors LLC has paid the property taxes for the past few years.
“We have given notice to the owner,” Carter said. “She has 30 days to clean up her property. If not, then a citation will be issued.”
