After a heated public hearing, the city council adopted its budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which comes with a six-mill tax hike.
For the next fiscal year, the city of Yazoo City plans to increase its millage from 76.37 to 82.37. The Yazoo City Municipal School District plans to increase its millage from 54.12 to 56.46 for the next fiscal year.
Within the city’s general fund, revenues have increased by $605,129 over the previous year due to the following factors:
An increase in property valuations due to new growth inside the city.
An increase in ad valorem taxes have been estimated due to an increase in overall millage from 76.37 to 82.37, increase of six mills.
Appropriations have been included to match grant funds that the city may be awarded for various citywide capital projects.
Expenditures have been increased by $463,100 over the previous year due to the following factors:
Increase in personnel costs for employee benefits.
Increase in appropriations for grant funding matching for various citywide capital projects.
Increases and decreases in departments’ budgets are also included.
Previously, the city of Yazoo City intended to contribute 0.6 mills to the Parks and Recreation Commission. However, during the recent public hearing, the city increased that contribution to 1.50 mills.
Within each city department, two departments will operate with a decreased budget in the upcoming year. The city clerk’s office and the street department both took cuts in their budgets.
However, seven departments will see an increase in their budgets in the upcoming year. Those departments include the mayor’s office, the Triangle Cultural Center, the building inspector, the police department, court services, the fire department and the cemetery.
The Yazoo City Community Complex will operate with the same funds it was given last fiscal year.
Residents will also see an increase in their garbage collection fees. Residential garbage fees will increase from $21 to $27. Commercial garbage fees will increase from $25 to $32.50.
