Alderman Aubry Brent Jr. said it is time for the American flag to receive the respect it deserves in the community.
Having served 26 years in the military, Brent said he is “sensitive” when it comes to how the American flag is treated, particularly within his own community.
“We all are patriots, and we bleed the same red blood,” he said. “I am very disappointed in how we as a city, even as a community, have treated our American flag.”
Brent said he received a number of phone calls from veterans commenting on how some of the flags within the city are tattered. He said he observed a flag on the city barn that was tattered. He said he called the barn and requested it be taken down.
“Even out here at our police department, the flag was out there, and it was raining,” he said. “It was pouring down raining, and the flag was flying. I don’t know whether our kids are taught how to respect the flag. But you do not let it rain on the flag.”
Brent said the community needs to be properly educated on how to treat the American flag in terms of respect.
“I don’t want to see another flag, especially flying over a city building, that is tattered and worn,” he said.
