Tax Collector Travis Crimm was unable to secure another full-time employee in his office after the Yazoo County Board of Supervisors did not make a motion for the hire.
No motion was made to hire another worker for Crimm during the county board meeting Monday morning. The county board said it was just not economically feasible to give Crimm another employee.
“I would like to see Travis have another full-time employee, but our budget will not accommodate another full-time employee,” said Supervisor Van Foster.
Aside from the budget, Foster added that Crimm’s office didn’t need another worker.
“Travis, I don’t want to hurt your feelings or make you mad, but I have been over there several times…and I have never seen an influx of people coming in there,” Foster said.
Crimm said his office workload is more than just handling the front desk. There are other duties within the office that need addressing. He also said the influx of people comes at different times.
“It happens at different times,” Crimm said. “I want this board to understand something too. The law states that it has to be an adequate staff, and I don’t have an adequate staff. You know this.”
No motion was made to hire another full-time employee within Crimm’s office.
“We will do what we have always done,” Crimm said. “We will handle it.”
Crimm then told the board it needs to stop claiming there has not been a tax increase.
“I have heard it over and over,” Crimm said. “We had a reappraisal year, and this board didn’t change its millage rate. That is a tax increase.”
Supervisor Jayne Dew said the board has not passed a tax increase for five years.
“The tax increase that has come about was reappraisal, and it has tried to keep up with inflation,” she said. “It hasn’t quite done it.”
“But that is still a tax increase, is it not,” Crimm asked.
The discussion then quickly ended with Crimm exiting the meeting.
