A 95-year-old woman was arrested last weekend after she allegedly shot at her neighbor shortly after chasing them with a pipe.
Otesia Harper, of Yazoo City, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following a confrontation with her neighbor last Saturday.
Interim Police Chief Jay Winstead said the incident sparked from an altercation between Harper and her neighbor, which led to Harper allegedly attempting to attack her neighbor with a pipe.
“She didn’t actually strike her neighbor with the pipe, however,” Winstead said. “The neighbor did not want to press charges so responding officers calmed Harper down, and she eventually went back inside her home.”
But afterwards, Winstead said Harper fired two rounds towards the home while the neighbors were standing on the porch. No injuries were reported from the shooting.
“Since the residents were on the porch and not inside the home, it is not considered shooting into an occupied dwelling,” Winstead said. “However, it is aggravated assault. Since this event escalated so much, we had to do our job as officers. We simply had to take Harper into custody. Regardless of the condition or age of the suspect, you have to follow the law.”
Harper was released on a $5,000 bond.
