A high-speed chase turned deadly late Sunday evening when a Yazoo County man was killed fleeing from deputies and patrolmen.
Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers said Justin Collins, 19, was pronounced dead on the scene from multi-system trauma.
Collins was one of three motorcyclists who fled law enforcement after reports of racing. He was killed after being thrown from his bike and hit by a patrolman.
Cpl. Kervin Stewart, with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, said deputies were first called to Highway 149 around 11:15 p.m. Sunday in reference to motorcycles drag racing.
“When deputies arrived, three motorcycles fled the scene at a high rate of speed with Yazoo County initiating a pursuit,” Stewart said. “As the pursuit entered Yazoo City, a Yazoo County deputy and one of the motorcycles collided at the intersection of Broadway and Locust Street with the rider being ejected into the eastbound lane. An MHP Trooper, in an attempt to assist the Yazoo County deputies, was traveling eastbound on Broadway Street and collided with the rider.”
Stewart said the crash is being investigated by the MHP.
