Jay Hopson, the new head football coach at the University of Southern Mississippi, will speak at the third annual Yazoo Fellowship of Christian Athletes Adult Chapter banquet.
The banquet will be Friday April 15 at McCoy Elementary. A meet and greet featuring Hopson and other Yazoo sports greats will be from 6-6:30 p.m. with the banquet beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $50 each and include a meal. There will also be a silent auction featuring autographed sports memorabilia. Tickets are available at The Yazoo Herald office at 1035 Grand Avenue.
A native of Vicksburg, Hopson was named the Golden Eagles head coach after a successful four-year stint as the head coach at Alcorn State University. Hopson led the Braves to a 32-17 record and back to-back SWAC conference titles in the last two seasons.
Prior to Alcorn State, Hopson served as the linebackers coach at Michigan for two seasons and as defensive coordinator at Memphis during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
He previously served at Southern Miss as a defensive back coach from 2001-03 and a defensive coordinator from 2005-07.
Dave Collins, president of the Yazoo FCA Adult Chapter, said the organization’s first two banquets exceeded his expectations. Yazoo native Hubert Owens, an SEC football official, spoke at the first banquet. Yazoo native and NFL legend Willie Brown spoke at last year’s event.
“The community has really gotten behind us,” Collins said. “We appreciate the support.”
All proceeds from the banquet go to support the Fellowship of Christian Athletes programs in Yazoo’s four area high schools.
