The investigation continues into recent shootings and robberies within Yazoo City, with warrants being issued to help officers make arrests. But Police Chief Jay Winstead said his department needs the public’s cooperation when dealing with open cases.
“We have had some shooting going on lately and had a couple of robberies,” Winstead said, during the recent Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting. “We got some warrants over the weekend back from the judge, and we look to make two arrests of people involved. I often come to this board meeting and put the ball back in the people’s court about what is going on in town. We cannot solve these crimes without physical evidence or testimonies.”
Winstead said anyone within the public who has information about any crime within the community has to be willing to work with local investigators.
“There is a lot of talk, back ad forth, with people about what is going on and who did what,” he said. “It basically boils down to hearsay and rumor. If no one is willing to come to us and give a statement, then these are the kind of things that are going to continue to happen in Yazoo City. I would hate to think there is any excuse that would allow that to be the norm here.”
Winstead urges the public to report any information about the recent shootings and robberies to the police department at 746-1131. He even provides his city contact number if a person does not feel comfortable coming to the police station. He can be reached at 590-5993.
“I will come to you if I need to,” he added.
