The manhunt for the suspect involved in this morning’s murder has now ended with the suspect being located deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Chief Terry Gann said Erwin Barnes has been located by authorities in Hinds County. However, he is deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Kenlanda Burns, 35, was gunned down near her apartment home early this morning with the suspect being identified as Barnes, who was also her boyfriend.
According to Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers, Burns was pronounced dead on the scene by Pafford medics at 6:37 a.m. at Willow Wood on Grady Avenue.
“The victim was departing her apartment when she was shot one time in the back of the head,” Shivers said. “She was pronounced dead on the scene from the gunshot wound.”
Gann said the suspect had a history of domestic violence. He also said a warrant for his arrest was active as of Sept. 10.
“We had been unable to locate him, but last Sunday evening, we received a tip on his whereabouts,” Gann said. “We got ready to arrest him, but when my officer checked the system to confirm there was an active warrant, the system did not show it as active. I don’t know why that happened, and we are investigating what could have happened.”
“I wish more could have been done,” Gann continued. “But there was an unfortunate glitch in the record system. I hate this more than anybody.”
