When it’s time to get to work, there are three local ladies that the community can count on. Yazoo City natives Zellee Delaware, Queenester Woolfolk and Alfreda Woodall can often be found within the community collecting trash and litter in an effort to beautify the town they are proud to call home.
“We love where we live, and we want our community to be nice and beautiful,” Delaware said.
For about five years, the three ladies decided to begin collecting trash and litter in their neighborhoods. From there, their volunteerism has grown to them picking up litter throughout their community. And they can often be found assisting the local Keep Yazoo Beautiful group in their clean-up day efforts.
Not only are they keeping their neighborhoods clean, but they are hoping to inspire the younger generation to want the same for their own community.
“We want to encourage others to do this in their neighborhoods,” said Woodall.
The biggest reward for the ladies is seeing the fruit of their labors after a long day of collecting trash and litter. Although they admit they are older and there are some physical limitations, they are motivated by the clean area afterwards to continue giving back to the community.
Their hard work has also been noticed by others within the community. Many times their clean-up days are met with food, water and other supplies from others.
The women said they would love to see more residents become involved with clean-up efforts. They suggested their “4 x 4 plan,” which includes cleaning up a four block area. Even the smallest effort can lead to bigger rewards.
“We want to lead by example and set forth an example for others in the community,” said Delaware.
