The “Moving Satartia Forward” group has big plans for their small village.
This group was started by Michele Harris, Irma Newell Hart and Todd Hart by putting their heads together and starting a committee to bring the community together.
“Everyone sees the potential, and everyone loves Satartia, what it stands for and the good vibes from the community,” said Harris.
They met with the Mississippi State Economic Extension Center and the Mississippi Development Authority for ideas on how to improve their town. Dr. Rachel Carter provided a list of potential future opportunities, ultimately leading the group to become a non-profit organization last July. Their committee has grown from three to nine people, and they have many other volunteers throughout the community and county.
Although Satartia’s population is only about 41 people, the committee said they have been pleased to see how many people have stepped up to assist their mission.
“You can go back in time and see that Satartia has something special that you can not find in many other places,” said Todd Hart.
The Moving Satartia Forward group has applied for grants through the Yazoo County Convention and Visitors Bureau, recently receiving a grant for signage to attract more attention towards the village of Satartia.
“We want to be more visible to tourist and day visitors,” said Harris. “We want to beautify the community and are working to create a community garden area.”
The group recently had a trunk-or-treat chili cook-off and had about 300 visitors who attended this event. They had candy parachuted out of a helicopter, held a chili cook-off and hosted many trunk-or-treat activities.
A Christmas parade will be held on December 10 with a variety of activities planned. The Junior Auxiliary of Yazoo City will be holding a “letters to Santa” booth for children. There will also be Disney characters in the Christmas parade such as the Snow Sisters, Spiderman and Cindy Lou. There will also be a taco food truck from 4:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. To conclude the Christmas parade festivities, there will be a cross lighting and a bonfire.
“We are going to continue to preserve the history and beautification of Satartia , as well as enhance our county,” Harris said.
If anyone would like to join the committee or even just to suggest ideas, the next meeting will be held on November 29 at Satartia Baptist Church at 4 p.m.
