Following a high-speed chase and an attempt to escape by swimming in a lake, two cousins are behind bars after throwing tobacco products and a small amount of marijuana into the confined yard of the county jail.
Devante Robinson and Fredrick Robinson are both charged with felony evading, felony malicious mischief, introducing contraband into a jail facility and resisting arrest.
Terry Gann, chief investigator with the Yazoo County Sheriff's Department, said the incident occurred around 4 a.m. Thursday.
"The tower guard at the jail noticed two individuals at the fence of the jail," Gann said. "They entered the yard by cutting through the fence with bolt cutters. Another guard shined a flashlight on them, causing them to run back out of the fence and head back towards their vehicle."
Gann said a high-speed chase followed with the suspects eventually crashing their vehicle.
"After the wreck, they fled into the woods between a lake and Jefferson Street," Gann said. "They eventually tried to swim in the lake, but deputies were able to surround them on all sides of the water."
Gann said the suspects surrendered and made their ways toward deputies, who quickly arrested them.
"A handgun was also thrown on the ground after they emerged from the water," Gann said. "We haven't determined yet who had the gun in their possession."
Gann said the contraband, which included tobacco products and a small amount of marijuana, the bolt cutters and the handgun were recovered by the authorities.
