Wyatt Sutton rejoins the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) as the Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Championships, following a brief stint as Director of Facilities, Operations, and Events at Norfolk State University.
While at Norfolk State, Sutton supervised all operational logistics for the school's home athletic events and was responsible for facility enhancements and preventative maintenance for all athletic facilities. During his time at Norfolk State, he completed several hundred thousand dollars in facility enhancements, including upgrades to Echols Hall Arena and Dick Price Stadium.
Prior to his tenure at Norfolk State, Sutton's post at the MEAC was as Director of Compliance and Championships. Prior to that, he had been the Assistant Director of Compliance and Championships since August 2016. As Assistant Director, Sutton served as the conference liaison to the MEAC member institutions, where he assisted with eligibility and interpretations of NCAA and MEAC rules education and governance, as well as the coordination of MEAC championships. He also served as the MEAC's Student-Athlete Advisor Committee (SAAC) advisor.
Currently, Sutton is primarily responsible for supervising all 15 of the MEAC's championships, which entails strategic planning, developing and managing budgets, identifying and securing venues, staffing, securing corporate partners, and managing all broadcasts and marketing activations.
Sutton came to the MEAC after serving as the Athletic Academic Counselor and Compliance Coordinator at Alcorn State University in Lorman, Miss. In this post, he oversaw compliance and academic matters relating to both NCAA and SWAC initial eligibility for new student-athletes and continuing eligibility for returning and transfer student-athletes, provided academic advisement for baseball and softball student-athletes, as well as maintained the compliance website and produce the compliance electronic newsletter.
Sutton is no stranger to athletics; he was a graduate assistant in athletics compliance at Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss. In this post, he processed waivers for initial eligibility for new student-athletes and continuing eligibility for returning and transfer student-athletes, monitored progress-towards-degree completion, interpreted NCAA and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) by-laws, rules, and regulations for all 18 intercollegiate athletic programs to coaches and staff, issued National Letters of Intent and financial aid agreements for prospective student-athlete as well as oversaw game day complimentary ticket admissions. In 2016, he participated in the NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar (ELS).
As a student-athlete, Sutton was a walk-on catcher on the Tigers' baseball team from 2010-15. His team won the 2013 and 2014 SWAC Tournament championships and the 2012-13 and 2013-14 teams earned bids to the NCAA Baseball Tournament. The 2013-14 team won in the first round of the NCAA Baseball Tournament against the No. 1 team in the country, the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns.
Sutton, a native of Jackson, Miss., a product of Jackson Public Schools (JPS) - Jim Hill High School. He earned a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (2014) and a Master's degree in sports science management (2016), both from Jackson State University.
Wyatt Harris Sutton is the son of BoNita L. Harris, Ph.D., the grandson of Margaret J. Harris and Edward Smith; and, the great-grandson of the late Velma J. Harris, John Battee, Ethel Smith, and John Smith.
He is a member of the Collegiate Event and Facility Management Association (CEFMA). And, also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Sutton resides in Norfolk, VA.
