Voters will head to the polls next Tuesday to determine the Democratic candidates in the upcoming city elections.
The primary election will be held Feb. 1 from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. with several candidates on the ballots for the mayoral and aldermen Democratic posts.
A sample ballot for next week’s primary election appears on page 16 of this edition of The Yazoo Herald.
For the mayoral seat, four candidates are vying for the Democratic post. Incumbent Mayor Diane Delaware will be facing candidates John Meeks, David “Mel” Starling and Joseph Thomas Jr.
For Ward 1, incumbent Ron Johnson will look to hold onto to his seat against Mary Houston, Charlie Jenkins, Terrance Jones and Dr. Stacy Leach.
For Ward 2, incumbent Andre Lloyd will face Macklin Austin and David Peyton.
For Ward 3, Democratic candidates Zelda Baker and Jammie McCoy will look to win the Democratic bid.
For Ward 4, with no opposition, Alderwoman Elizabeth Thomas will appear on the ballot.
The Democratic Primary Election will be held at the following locations:
• Ward 1: Boys and Girls Club, located at 516 E. Canal Street
Ward 2: Yazoo City Teen Center, located at 1222 Jackson Street
Ward 3: Washington Street Fire Station, located at 210 S. Washington Street
Ward 4: LT Miller Community Center, located at 930 Lamar Avenue
The city clerk’s office will also be opened for absentee ballots Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Jan. 29 from 8 a.m. until noon.
