For a second, it looked like the Yazoo City Indians’ football fans were in for a Homecoming treat as the Indians held a halftime lead over rival Canton this past Friday night.
That lead would be short-lived, however, as Canton stormed out of the locker room after the intermission and scored 26 unanswered points en route to a 26-6 win to spoil an otherwise festive night in Yazoo City.
“I was proud of our fight and the way we got off to a fast start Friday night,” said Yazoo City head coach Justin Washington.
“That was the first time all season we led at halftime. We just got fatigued in the second half and started to lose our mental focus. That’s when the turnovers started. The missed tackles and assignments. We’re a young team with freshmen and sophomores all over the field so that’s just a part of growing up. Being able to keep your focus and execute even when you’re tired.”
After a scoreless first half, the Indians cracked the scoreboard with around 2:45 left in the first half on a nine yard Desmond Johnson touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed but the Indians led 6-0 going into the half.
Unfortunately for the Indians, the Tigers roared out of the intermission and took complete control of the game on both sides of the ball.
In the end the Indians were 0-7 and still in search of their first win.
The search doesn’t get any easier this Friday when the Indians travel to powerhouse Holmes County Central, the state’s No. 8 ranked team.
Said Washington, “This is going to be an extremely tough game for us, but it can also be used as a measuring stick. We’ve got nothing to lose going into this game. It’s going to give our young guys a chance to measure themselves against a very good team and will also let them see the goal we’re striving to achieve.”
Against Canto Johnson led the way with 13 carries for 81 yards. Cordero McBride had 28 yards on eight carries.
McBride led the defense with eight tackles.
