With just 1:37 left in the Yazoo County-Humphreys County game last Friday night, Panther quarterback TJ Rials completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Malilkh Brown to tie the game 28.
The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, however, and the Cowboys scored in overtime for a 34-28 win in the district opener for both teams.
Yazoo County finished strong, scoring the last two touchdowns of the fourth quarter.
Jarret Jasper scored on an eight-yard carry to cut the Cowboys lead to 28-22 with 8:29 on the clock.
The Panthers were unable to add the extra point after both fourth quarter touchdowns, which proved to be costly in the end.
Yazoo County got the ball first in overtime, and Cameron Williams was hit out of bounds for a personal foul against Humphreys County. The Panthers sideline at first celebrated, believing that the penalty resulted in an automatic first down, but the officials ruled that it was still fourth down.
The next play was a pass to the end zone that was ruled incomplete, setting up the Humphreys County winning drive.
Rials finished the game completing 14-of-22 passes for two touchdowns with one interception.
Cameron Williams had eight receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown. Brown had three catches for 54 yards and a touchdown, and Treyon Nelson had one catch for 40 yards.
Chandler Hardman had a three-yard touchdown for Yazoo County in the second quarter, and Cameron Willliams caught a 10-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
Treyon Nelson had five solo tackles and four assists to help lead the Panthers defense. Rodney Jefferson and Devon Fountain each had three tackles and six assists.
Dewayne Brown had three tackles, three assists and a tackle for loss. Kveon Moore and Ty Boddy each had a sack.
With the win Humphreys County improved to 6-0 while Yazoo County fell to 2-4. The Panthers will have a tough district game this week as Yazoo County hosts Winona.
Both teams enter the contest with 2-4 records and hungry for a win. Winona fell to Charleston 34-7 last week for a third straight loss, but this week will be the team’s first district game.
