More often than not when a team wins the statistical battle against an opponent, they usually win.
That was not the case, however, for Yazoo County last week.
The Panthers posted more yards (passing and rushing), had more first downs, a better third down efficiency, and won the time of possession battle against Humphreys County.
The only problem is they also had more turnovers (YCHS - 3, HC - 1) which ultimately led to a 22-14 defeat.
The Panthers had 394 yards of total offense to the Cowboys’ 364.
Yazoo County rushed for 241 yards to Humphreys’ 233, and threw for 153 yards while Humphreys had 131.
In the end though, it was Yazoo County’s two fumbles lost and one interception compared to the Cowboys’ one fumble that sealed the deal.
After a scoreless first quarter, YCHS opened things up with a 55-yard Jarrett Jasper touchdown run to take a 6-0 lead.
Humphreys scored on a pair of TD passes (one for 16 yards and one for 83 yards) to take a 16-6 lead at the intermission.
The score remained that way until midway through the third quarter when the Cowboys added another score on a six yard run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score 22-6.
Jasper scored his second touchdown of the night, this time on an 18-yard pass from quarterback T.J. Rials.
Rials was good on the two point run to narrow the score to 22-14, but that’s as close as the Panthers would get.
Rials connected on 9-of-15 passes for 159 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Cameron Williams was the leading receiver with 92 yards on four receptions. Jasper also had four receptions for 52 yards and Adarius Hodge had one catch for nine yards.
Jasper led all YCHS rushers with 93 yards on 12 carries, followed by Rials with 83 yards on 10 carries and Kavontae Jones with 12 carries for 62 yards.
Brayden Jones and Xzavian Gainwell led the Panther defense with 11 and 10 tackles respectively.
Timothy Grant had eight tackles, Tayshaun Simmons and Dakwon Reasor each had five tackles and Andre Simmons and Dewayne Brown both had four.
Yazoo County travels to Winona this Friday for another district battle.
