After a two-season hiatus, the Yazoo City Indians finally know what it feels like to be on the right side of a regular season game after winning in grand fashion Friday night, 48-7 over visiting St. Patrick.
The Indians improved to 1-4 on the season and prepare to host Vicksburg this Friday.
Yazoo City was clicking on both sides of the ball against St. Patrick as Maurice Booker led the defense and Desmond Johnson led the offense.
Johnson had 10 carries for 186 yards and three touchdowns while Booker had two interceptions and eight tackles on the night.
The Indian defense accounted for the game’s first score when Jaleen Barber returned an interception 38 yards to the house for a 6-0 lead with 7:56 to play in the opening quarter.
Johnson scored his first of three TDs at the 4:21 mark on a 65-yard run, giving YHS a 12-0 lead.
St. Patrick scored their only TD of the night on the ensuing possession on a 45-yard pass. Their extra point kick was true, and they trailed 12-7 as the first quarter came to a close.
Booker’s first interception set the Indians up with good field position around midfield, and Johnson cashed in two plays later with a 33-yard touchdown.
QB Tyler Taylor’s pass to Amarion Brown was good for the PAT attempt and Yazoo City led 20-7.
Another Booker INT gave the Indians the ball back and this time it was Taylor scoring on a seven-yard run to push the lead to 26-7 at the half.
Johnson opened the third quarter with a 43 yard run to the St. Patrick goal line and cashed in a play later with a one yard run for a 34-7 lead.
Taylor scored on a 15 yard run and Tobias McGee had a five yard run to close out the game’s scoring.
